Recounting Rainy Rugby

In this post we practice the recount genre. This is a very common generic text form in IELTS Speaking Part 2, when you are asked to recount some kind of experience.

In this example the candidate might have been asked to describe a time when they experienced very bad weather. If you’ve experienced bad weather, why not tell us about it in the comments below?

It was Saturday evening. I was at my friend’s house. We were discussing where to go to watch the rugby match between England and Australia. As we were talking it started to rain, so we took a taxi to a sports bar in Seminyak. The match began at 10.30. While we were watching there was a heavy storm with thunder and lightning, but we couldn’t hear the thunder because people were shouting in support of their favourite team. When we left the sports bar it was still raining but not heavily. When I arrived home there was water on the floor in parts of my house. Even now there are holes in the roof that I still have to fix!
