Recounting Rainy Rugby

In this post we practice the recount genre. This is a very common generic text form in IELTS Speaking Part 2, when you are asked to recount some kind of experience.

In this example the candidate might have been asked to describe a time when they experienced very bad weather. If you’ve experienced bad weather, why not tell us about it in the comments below?

It was Saturday evening. I (1. be) at my friend’s house. We (2. discuss) where to go to watch the rugby match between England and Australia. As we (3. talk) it (4. start) to rain, so we (5. take) a taxi to a sports bar in Seminyak. The match (6. begin) at 10.30. While we (7. watch) the rugby suddenly there (8. be) a heavy storm with thunder and lightning, but we (9. not can) hear the thunder because people (10. shout) in support of their favourite team. When we (11. leave) the sports bar it was still (12. rain) but not heavily. When I (13. arrive) home there (14. be) water on the floor in parts of my house. Even now there (15. be) holes in the roof that I still (16. have to) fix!
