Minimal pairs practice

A minimal pair is two words that sound the same except for one sound. Can you recognise which of two words is being spoken? Have a go!

  1. Click 'start' and wait for the audio controller to appear.
  2. If audio doesn't play automatically, click 'play' on the audio controller.
  3. Click the word you hear.
  4. Click 'next pair'.
  5. Repeat steps 3-4
  • Green means correct.
  • Red means incorrect.
  • Click phonemic symbols to hear them.
  • Click 'phonemic alphabet' to access the full range of sounds in standard English.

This activity includes 20 minimal pairs.
